Where and When to Gather

Mallow loves disturbed ground, roadsides, and waste areas, so gather this plant wisely, avoiding areas prone to toxic accumulations. You probably have some in your yard, which is an ideal place for harvesting if you know the conditions there to be safe. At our lower elevations, mallow thrives through the winter into spring, while elsewhere it is a plant of the summer into autumn. Gather the roots when the plant is still young.

How to Gather

Pluck the young leaves on their stem by hand or clip with pruners. The flowers can also be gathered for decoration on a plate or within a salad. The largest seedpods are plucked off the stem individually—or strip the whole stem with your fingers when there’s a large amount of mature seedpods and few leaves. Conversely, cut back whole branches and harvest the desired parts individually. The roots can be gathered just before the plant flowers to ensure they are most tender.
